How to Use an Inhaler Correctly with a Spacer

  1. Shake inhaler 3-4 times, checking to see that there is medicine left.
  2. Attach inhaler to spacer.
  3. Exhale normally and close lips around mouthpiece of spacer.
  4. Discharge 1 puff from inhaler into spacer and begin to inhale SLOWLY and deeply for 5 to 10 seconds.
  5. Hold breath for at least 5 to 10 seconds, or as long as possible. If you cough out the medicine, you might need to redose.
  6. Exhale slowly.
  7. Wait at least 5 (five) minutes and restart the process from Step 3 if a second puff is needed.
  8. If the inhaled drug is a corticosteriod, rinse mouth out with tap water when finished. Spit out the water; do not swallow it.
